About ARDMS
In this post we are going to introduce you to ARDMS. Anyone with interest in sonography must be familiar with ARDMS.
What is ARDMS?
ARDMS stands for American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography. ARDMS incorporated in June 1975, is an independent, not-for-profit organization that is the globally recognized standard of excellence in sonography and has certified more than 65,000 individuals.
What ARDMS Does?
In a ‘nut shell’ ARDMS is an organization that works with a ‘motto’ that “no sonographer should be without a job”. ARDMS administers examinations in the various fields of sonography and awards the following credentials (to those only who pass them):
RDMS® – Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer®
RDCS® – Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer®
RVT® – Registered Vascular Technologist®
RPVI® – Registered Physician in Vascular Interpretation®
What ARDMS Credentials are Important?
ARDMS is though a non-profit organization, but for sonographers, it has a great deal of benefit in pursuing career. Credentials awarded by ARDMS are widely accepted in the medical community by sonography and vascular professional organizations. These credentials greatly help the sonographers by increasing the likelihood of getting a job as accredited certifications are a major weakness of employers. However, ARDMS does not validate the day-to-day job performance of any sonography professional as that is the job of your department head/employer. ANSI-ISO, NCCA Accreditation
Granted through the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), ARDMS has earned ANSI-ISO 17024 accreditation for certifying bodies from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The National Organization for Competency Assurance (NOCA), established in 1977 as a nonprofit organization, is a leader in establishing quality standards for certifying organizations. ARDMS has also earned accreditation with the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) which is the accrediting arm of NOCA.
Administrative Structure
ARDMS has a Board of Directors, Examination Development Task Forces and Professional staff. Board is involved in policy making and implementation. Task Forces develop examinations of their respective specialties. The Professional (as well as paid) staff is dedicated towards administration of ARDMS programs and assists applicants and registrants.
How to get ARDMS Credentials?
The only means of obtaining an ARDMS credential is by taking specific examination. After fulfilling the required prerequisites, applicants are then required to pass two comprehensive examinations to earn a credential:
(1) the Sonography Principles and Instrumentation (SPI) examination
and
(2) at least one corresponding specialty examination.
Where to take the Examination?
Apart from America, ARDMS examinations are also being delivered around the globe. You can take the examination in centre nearest to you. For details, please visit

How to Apply for Examination?
You can apply online by visiting ARDMS site
https://myardms.ardms.org/login.aspx
and making your ARDMS account. You will get an ARDMS ID number which you will use for your subsequent correspondence with ARDMS. After that you become a registered user and can select

the application you want to apply.
What makes me what?
If you want to become Achilles, you must first know what a sword looks like. But in sonology, whatever you may want to be, you have to take SPI (Sonography Principles and Instrumentation) Examination as you should know the tools you are going to play with. Then comes the ‘organ preference’ that can lead you to become RDMS, RDCS, RVT or RVPI.
You may apply and take the SPI examination and the specialty examination in any order. However, once the first examination is passed (either the SPI or specialty), you are required to take and pass the second examination within five years of passing the first examination.
